The journey to Kedarnath starts from Haridwar. First, you’ll go to Rishikesh, then to Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Agastyamuni, and finally to Sonprayag. From here, you’ll share a jeep for 50 rupees with fellow passengers and reach Gaurikund. It takes a whole day to travel from Haridwar to Gaurikund. You can find the bus from Haridwar bus station around 3 to 4 in the morning, which will cost you around 700 to 800 rupees. Gaurikund is the starting point for a 16 km trek to Kedarnath temple.
When you visit, remember to take a wooden stick for climbing, which costs about 50 rupees. From Gaurikund, after walking about 300 to 400 meters, you’ll find the first horse stop where you can hire a horse or mule for 2950 rupees per person for one side. I request that whenever you visit Kedarnath, either choose the trek or book a helicopter, as these horse owners mistreat the animals and only care about money. You can also book a bus online for the journey. If you’re planning to spend some time here, it’s better to stop at Gaurikund, slightly before Sonprayag. You’ll find more lodging options in Gaurikund compared to Sonprayag, where facilities are limited. If you choose to get a room in Gaurikund, you might have to pay around 3,000 rupees for a deluxe room. The price may vary depending on the season. If you opt for a standard room, budget around 1,500 rupees. On the way to Kedarnath Temple, there are several points of interest. The first is Jungle Chatti, 16 km into the trek, known for good food and drink options.
After Jungle Chatti, you’ll come across Bhimbali, about 1 km further. Beyond this, there’s Rambada, where the more accessible route to Kedarnath is via helicopter. Helicopter bookings can be made from Guptkashi, which is considered the best place to book a helicopter ride to Kedarnath. The cost per person for a helicopter ride is approximately 7,347 rupees. You can also book helicopter tickets online.
When you embark on the journey, it’s advised to carry raincoats, umbrellas, sturdy shoes, warm clothing, and other essentials. While these can be arranged in Gaurikund, they might be more expensive. The actual ascent to Kedarnath starts after Rambada. For those who find walking challenging, you can book a “kachhar” from Bhimbali. Lincholi is the next point on the route, just 3 km away from Kedarnath Temple.
If you want to use a palki (palanquin), it will cost around 10,000 rupees, which covers both the ascent and descent on the same day. Riding a horse costs about 6,000 rupees, while using a “pithu” (porter) will cost around 10,000 rupees, and the cost might vary based on weight. After Rambada, you’ll truly begin to experience the beauty of Kedarnath. GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) offers camps, but prior booking is necessary, and the rates have increased to around 800 rupees. GMVN’s booking should be done around 2 months in advance.

Kedarnath Temple is open for about 6 months, closing two days after Diwali. While the usual Kedarnath pilgrimage can be accomplished in 3 days, if you’re looking to allow for a more relaxed journey, considering the potential crowds and other factors, you might want to plan for a 4-day trip.
